Doctor Who The Movie

On this day in 1996 the first and only television appearance of the eighth Doctor aired on BBC One. I can still remember the night it aired. It was the first new episode of Doctor Who I got to watch the first time it aired on TV (and began a streak of seeing every episode as it's aired on TV since). I watched it in my grandparents back room with my younger brother who was probably a bigger Doctor Who fan than me (I'm sorry but I won't use the word Whovian). It was such an exciting thing for us to enjoy together and we both loved it. I know that's not a popular view and I'm not sure my brother is quite so fond of it these days but I still love it to this day. It felt so different to the original series I'd briefly outgrown (it would be a few years before I could really appreciate Classic Who) and Paul McGann was just perfect. He is very much my Doctor and I'm eternally grateful to Big Finish and the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip for allowing me to enjoy many more adventures with the Doctor I was cruelly denied the chance of enjoying on TV. Tonight I'm gonna relive his first adventure for old time's sake.
